Art Basel 2022: Lynn Hershman Leeson
Altman Siegel and Bridget Donahue are thrilled to announce “Water Women,” a presentation of work by Lynn Hershman Leeson (b. 1941) for this year’s edition of Art Basel.
Lynn Hershman Leeson’s pioneering, multifaceted practice considers technology and the human body, confronting how each are influenced by biological and social constructs. Whether through genetic engineering, methods of surveillance, or interactive AI, the artist probes the ethics and societal implications of the same groundbreaking science that is often used to make her artworks, addressing power structures as well as identity-formation and transmutability.
This project focuses on Hershman Leeson’s early works on paper, the Water Women series, and one of her most recent sculptural works, Twisted Gravity (2021 – ongoing). Although diverse in medium, the artworks underline Hershman Leeson’s preoccupation with the increasingly blurred boundaries between humans and technology and the transformative potential of this collision.
